Slate, leather, or wood: choosing wedding coaster materials
Updated 2026-08-08 · Big Laser Co., Loveland, Colorado
Of the wedding favors that survive the reception, coasters have the best track record: guests use them during the toasts, then take them home and keep using them. We engrave three coaster materials — slate, leather, and baltic birch plywood — all on 4x4 blanks, and each changes the look, the weight, and the price. Here is how to choose.
How engraving behaves on each material
Laser engraving is monochrome. There is no ink involved: the laser cuts your design into the surface, and the contrast comes from the material itself. Slate engraves light gray against dark stone. Leather darkens where the beam touches it. Plywood burns to a rich brown against pale birch. Because the mark is physically cut into the coaster rather than printed on top, it cannot peel, fade, or wash off — the hundredth round of drinks looks the same as the first.
That monochrome quality rewards clean artwork. Monograms, names and dates, and simple line illustrations all engrave beautifully; photographic gradients and multi-color logos do not, and we will tell you so before you commit.
Slate: dark, heavy, unmistakable
Slate is real stone, and it reads that way from across the room. The engraving comes out pale gray on near-black — the highest-contrast pairing of the three — so names and dates stay legible even in dim reception lighting. It is also the heaviest option by a wide margin: a slate coaster plants itself on the table and stays put.
That heft is the point. Slate suits lodge weddings, taprooms, breweries, and mountain venues — anywhere the tablescape already leans toward stone, timber, and low light. It is the premium pick at an extra $2 per coaster, and worth budgeting for when the setting matches.
Leather: warm, quiet, made to age
Leather is the tactile choice. It is soft in the hand, silent on the table, and the engraving burns in as a darker tone-on-tone mark — subtler than slate, closer to a branded monogram than a printed graphic. Leather also does something the other two do not: it develops character with handling and use, which is exactly what you want in a keepsake.
Choose leather for vintage and heirloom-leaning weddings — initials, a date, a crest, executed simply. It is the coaster most likely to spend the next decade on a guest's desk.
Plywood: light, affordable, easy to love
Baltic birch plywood is the lightest and least expensive of the three. It engraves crisp and dark against blonde wood, so detailed artwork — florals, illustrated venues, longer text — holds up well. It is the natural fit for rustic, barn, and outdoor weddings, and the low weight matters more than you might think: out-of-town guests can drop a few in a carry-on without a second thought.
What they cost
Every material is available in two tiers. The standard tier is $7 per coaster with a three-coaster minimum. The wedding tier is $9 per coaster with a 20-coaster minimum, and it includes preset artwork options plus extra design time. Slate adds $2 per coaster in either tier, and non-round "fancy" silhouettes add $0.50.
| Material | Wedding tier (min 20) | Standard tier (min 3) | |----------|----------------------|-----------------------| | Plywood | $9 | $7 | | Leather | $9 | $7 | | Slate | $11 | $9 |
Bulk pricing kicks in at volume: 5% off at 50 coasters, 10% off at 100, which is the ceiling for a single catalog order. Larger runs are welcome — they are scheduled as production batches, so get in touch early. And if you want to see the engraving in person before committing to a full guest list, the $16 Engraved Coaster 4-Pack in our shop is the low-stakes way to do it.
The favor test
The honest measure of a wedding favor is where it is a year later. Coasters pass because they are useful the moment they are handed out — they work during the reception, then go home and keep working. Slate, leather, or plywood, the engraving is permanent and the object is practical. Nothing here is destined for a landfill.
